There’s a transformation underway in the Bronx. The Richard Pruss Wellness Center – a hub for health and wellness – is currently in construction with a grand opening slated for 2021. The new building will house an integrated team of specialists focused on supporting Bronxites’ behavioral and primary health care needs.

It is anticipated that more than 6,000 individuals will visit the Center at the corner of East 148th Street and Courtlandt Avenue. The 84,000-square-foot facility will offer a range of behavioral health services including:

  • Outpatient treatment for substance use disorder
  • Mental health counseling
  • Care coordination for chronic or severe medical conditions
  • Recovery support
  • Primary health care clinic
  • Centralized Admissions to Samaritan Daytop Village's programs

With multiple programs under one roof, clients no longer need to travel across different locations to benefit from multiple healthcare specialties.

Five programs currently located in Mott Haven will move into the finished building: Willis Avenue Opioid Treatment Program, Independence Outpatient Treatment Program, New Beginnings Community Counseling Center, Hope Management Program and PARC Bronx. Because these programs are staying in the neighborhood, the new construction will keep 180 jobs in the community.

Mitchell Netburn, President & CEO of Samaritan Daytop Village, said, “The Richard Pruss Wellness Center will be a transformative project. Not only will it change thousands of lives for the better, it will keep jobs in this neighborhood and become an oasis to a long-underserved community that critically needs behavioral and primary health care.”

The Center is named in honor of the late Richard Pruss, President Emeritus and former Board Chair of Samaritan Daytop Village, who passed away in 2018. Pruss spent his entire career with the agency – starting as a volunteer and rising to take the reins as the agency’s first CEO. His pioneering work helped generations of New Yorkers confront their addiction and find the road to recovery. Among his many accomplishments, Pruss guided the agency as one of the first providers to introduce primary healthcare services during treatment for substance use disorder.

Netburn stated, “The Center is a fitting tribute to the legacy of Richard Pruss, a visionary and fierce advocate for people in recovery, who dedicated his career and life’s work to the behavioral health field.”
