PARC Bronx Thriving One Year Later
Samaritan Daytop Village opened its second PARC (Peer Alliance Recovery Center) in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx last August. One year later, PARC Bronx counts 265 members from Manhattan to New Jersey who take part in the center’s wide range of services.
The Bronx community has been among the hardest hit during the opioid epidemic. In 2018, opioids claimed the lives of 272 Bronx residents. Compared to the other four boroughs, the Bronx has had the highest rate and number of overdose deaths in 2017. As such, the community has embraced PARC Bronx wholeheartedly.
PARC Bronx offers members the tools and resources they need to avoid relapse and lead sober, productive lives. The center offers one-on-one recovery coaching, workshops, group sessions, computer training, social and recreational activities, vocational assistance and peer-to-peer support. Certified Peer Recovery Advocates are also on hand to provide information and education about treatment and to help families navigate insurance concerns.
Since the quarantine, PARC Bronx has transitioned its trainings and workshops to virtual sessions. Recovery Coaches at the program have been making recovery wellness calls and helping members access needed resources to sustain their recovery. They also support Samaritan Daytop Village’s residential treatment clients through telehealth services.
Virtual sessions currently include:
- Daily virtual Recovery Rap sessions (Monday – Friday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.)
- Monthly Recovery Coach training classes - Queens or Bronx
- Quarterly Peer Ethics training classes
The center is funded in part with $350,000 from the federal State Opioid Response Grant, administered by the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS).
