Progress Update at Highbridge, Facade Installation On-Going

422 Affordable Units & Shelter Beds Replace Rehab Facility

By Michael Hayes, Urbanize NYC

After the bulk of masonry work on the facade is completed, the patching-in of more decorative facade elements is underway at 26-story fully affordable and supportive housing complex on the eastern edge of Highbridge park in eponymously named neighborhood in the Bronx.

The project, conveniently dubbed “Highbridge” at 1381 University Ave. was ushered in by Samaritan Daytop Village, a residential treatment and rehab service provider, who previously operated out of a 19th century convent on the site of this redevelopment. The 273-foot-tall structure is being constructed by Mega Contracting with design by Magnusson Architecture & Planning.

Of the overall 331,000 square feet, the project is divided into 125 affordable units, 190 supportive units and 106 temporary shelter units, for a combined 422 units; with 5,000 square feet of community space and facilities to support the buildings occupants.

According to the architect, “The amenity-rich residential programs will have a wide variety of common spaces to promote health and wellness through both passive and active recreation. Large and small, programmed and unprogrammed, these shared areas are filled with natural light and panoramic views.”

The project replaces a two-story convent which was eventually converted to a rehab facility owned and operated by Samaritan Daytop.

Completion is expected in the summer of 2027.
