Transcript of news segment:

New this morning in a bonus edition of rebuilding the Bronx. An empty outdoor space in Tremont is getting a major makeover thanks to the help of volunteers and one major company stepping in. Our News12’s Stephania Selenas shares the details.

A shelter system in the Bronx is focused on supporting families through tough times. So when a grant program gave Samaritan Daytop Village the chance to build something special for kids, they went for it.

“We were all screaming and just so excited.”

So they’re joining forces with Lowe’s to elevate community spaces and leaders say it’s making a difference.

“Over 700 kids a year can have access to being outdoors, playing, learning things.”

Through its hometown’s program, Lowe’s awarded a $170,000 grant to transform a empty space at the Glorious House family shelter in Tremont. And that’s when the work began.

“We’ve got the playground equipment, brand new floor here. And we’ve got, you know, rubber mats that are going to go down to protect the kids.”

Now comes the fun part, painting this wall with this beautiful bright blue. Volunteers in red vests are seen painting in every corner, bringing the new playground to life.

It’s just all about giving back to the community. What was once an empty space will soon be filled with joy of kids at play in Tremont. Estania Selenas, News12, the Bronx.

All right, Ephania, it looks great. Thank you. Take out your phone and scan this QR code to learn more about this new playground and of all the other ways here on 12 we’re course helping rebuild the Bronx.

An empty outdoor space at a family shelter in Tremont is getting a big makeover.

With the help of volunteers and a $170,000 grant from Lowe’s Hometowns program, Samaritan Daytop Village is transforming the lot at Gloria’s House Family Transitional Residence on Park Avenue into a colorful new playground.

The project is designed to give kids living in transitional housing a safe space to play and for families to gather. When completed, the playground will benefit more than 300 families and 600 children each year.

Officials say the playground is about 90% complete, with finishing touches underway before it officially opens.

The effort is part of Lowe’s national commitment to improve 10 million square feet of community spaces across the country.
