Nonprofit helps veterans struggling with substance abuse

Veterans who served our country often struggle not only with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but also with substance abuse.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than one in ten veterans have been diagnosed with a substance use disorder.

A non-profit is nationally recognized for treating veterans with substance abuse problems in the city.

Samaritan Daytop Village serves thousands of people at several facilities throughout the city.

Roger Walker, program director at the Ed Thompson Veterans Program in Queens, joined NY1 anchor Rocco Vertuccio on “Weekends on 1” to discuss his work with the nonprofit and his own experience as a veteran struggling with substance abuse.
